24 .MARYAM: AN EXEMPLARY MUSLIM WOMAN
Allah made it possible for people to understand how to live the Quran s morality by giving examples from the Prophets and other Muslims lives. One of these sincere Muslims is Maryam, one of the two women noted for their exemplary characters: "Allah has made an example for those who believe: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said: "My Lord, build a house in the Garden for me in Your presence, rescue me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and rescue me from this wrongdoing people. And Maryam, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity-We breathed Our Spirit into her. She confirmed the Words of her Lord and His Book, and was one of the obedient". (Surat at-Tahrim: 11-12)

Bashfulness: A charecteristic of a Muslimah
Bashfulness
is the asset of the believing woman that helps her preserve her honor, dignity
and status. All righteous wives are bashful in their behavior and in everything
else - their clothing, their movement, their speech, their dealings and their
manners. The bashfulness of the believing wife makes her more adherent to the
Islamic dress code, whether it be Hijaab or the face cover. She does not wear
any thing that is transparent, tight, similar to men’s clothes, ostentatious,
scented or enticing. How can she not do all this when it is an obligation and
she would bear sins if she did not abide by these rules? Allaah The Almighty
Says (what means):
{and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their
chests } [Quran 24:31]
{O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the
women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments.
That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. }
[Quran 33:59]
{and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of
the former times of ignorance }[Quran 33:33]
How can a woman display herself as righteous while she displays her charms to
every eye in order to attract attention? What would she then keep special for
her husband? The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Bashfulness
and faith are inseparable; if one of them is missing, the other will be missing
as well.”

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Tantawi dies
Egyptian
officials says Grand Imam of Al-Azhar ,
who caused storm in Muslim world when he shook Peres' hand, dies of heart attack
at age 81 during visit to Riyadh .Sunni Islam's top cleric, Sheikh
Mohammed Sayed Tantawi , died on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia of
a heart attack suffered while boarding a plane, Egyptian officials and state
media said. He was 81 years old.
Tantawi, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar - Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning
- was in Riyadh to attend the King Faisal awards
ceremony , the official MENA news agency said.
Tantawi was boarding a plane early Wednesday morning when he suffered severe
pain and fell on the stairs, Egyptian television said. He was rushed to
the Amir Sultan hospital in Riyadh where doctors proclaimed him dead.
He died of a heart attack in the Saudi capital Riyadh, where he was attending
a prize-giving ceremony. Sheikh Tantawi had infuriated radical Islamists with
his
moderate views on women wearing the veil.

Neglecting the Glorious Quran
It
is recommended for every believing man and woman to recite the Book of Allaah,
the Noble Quran, often, with due contemplation and understanding. This may be
done by using a copy of the Quran or from one's memory. Allaah - the Most High
– Says (what means): "[This is] a blessed Book
(the Quran) which We have revealed to you [O Muhammad], that they might reflect
upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded."
[Quran 38:29]
And: "Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allaah
(the Quran) and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have
provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a transaction [i.e. profit]
that will never perish. That He may give them in full their rewards and increase
for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative." [Quran
35:29-30]
The aforementioned recitation of the Quran includes both reciting and acting
upon it (abiding by what Almighty Allaah enjoins in it and refraining from what
He forbids in it). The recitation is to be done with contemplation and understanding
of it. Sincerity to Allaah is a means of complying with and acting upon the
Quran, and its recitation contains a great reward - as the Prophet said: "Recite
the Quran, for on the Day of Resurrection, it shall come as an intercessor for
its companion (one who recites and complies by its teachings)."
[Muslim]
The Prophet also said: "The best of you is he who
learns the Quran and teaches it." [Al-Bukhaari]

Celebrating extraordinary Muslim women
Today
on 10 March, three Muslim women will be honoured alongside philanthropist
Melinda French Gates and human rights activists Panmelo
Castro from Brazil and Rebecca
Lolosoli from Kenya, by Vital
Voices Global Partnership , a Washington, DC-based organisation
that works to empower women around the world.
The need to recognise the work of Muslim women is important. Type the search
terms "Muslim women" or "women
in Islam" online and chances are that a majority of English-language
hits will consist of stories relating to what Muslim women wear on their heads
or how women in Muslim-majority countries are subjected to physical abuse, or
subjugated under the false pretext of religious principle.
But there is another side to Muslim women that is too infrequently recognised,
reported or discussed. The Vital Voices Global Partnership awards ceremony,
taking place two days after International Women's
Day , provides an opportunity to celebrate this not uncommon,
yet too frequently overshadowed, side to Muslim women.
Andeisha Farid grew up in a refugee
camp outside Afghanistan. As a teenager, she lived in a Pakistani hostel for
six years, where she studied and tutored others. In 2008, at the age of 25,
she started her own non-profit organisation, the
Afghan Child Education and Care Organization (AFCECO) ,
in Kabul. Today, AFCECO runs ten orphanages in Afghanistan and Pakistan for
over 450 children of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Why hate oneself
The
unbelievers will be addressed: “Indeed, greater than your present loathing
of yourselves is God’s loathing of you when you were called to the faith
and you rejected it.” They will say: “Our Lord! Twice have You caused
us to die, just as twice You have brought us to life! Now that we have recognized
our sins, is there any way out?” [They will be told]: “This is all
because when God alone was invoked, you denied this truth; whereas, when partners
were associated with Him, you believed in them! All judgment rests with God,
the Exalted, the Supreme One.” He it is who shows you His signs and sends
down sustenance from the sky for you. Yet only those who turn to God will take
heed. (The Forgiving, Ghafir; 40: 10-13)
The verses just before this passage drew an image of certain angels, the carriers
of God’s throne and those surrounding it. It shows them in supplication,
address their prayer to God appealing for His grace to be bestowed on believers,
their brethren in faith. Now the surah gives a contrasting image of the unbelievers
who find themselves in a totally different capacity. Everyone is looking for
support, but none is to be found. In fact all bonds with all beings and things
in the universe are severed. They are called out so that they can listen to
the rebuke coming from all directions. The arrogance they demonstrated in this
life is turned now into humiliation. They want to place their hopes in someone,
but none is available to encourage their hopes:
The Arabic text uses the strongest word for hate. We see them addressed from
all corners and told that God’s loathing of them when they were called
upon to believe and still rejected the faith is far stronger than their feelings
of hate toward themselves as they realize to what end they have brought themselves.
