itik'af
Prayers

With the last 10 nights befalling us, some of you may start hearing a new word flying around the Muslim community – the word is “I’tikaaf”.
What does it mean? How is it done? Who’s it for? and What can you do about it?

It is strange that the Muslims have almost forgotten this great Sunnah of i’tikaaf when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not give it up from the time he entered Madeenah until Allaah took him (in death).

So, what is I’tikaaf?

I’tikaaf is one of the confirmed Sunnahs which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did regularly. The basic idea of i’tikaaf is to cut oneself off from people and turn to Allaah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to order that a kind of tent be pitched for him in the mosque, and he would stay in it, keeping away from people and turning to his Lord, so he could be on his own with his Lord in a true sense of the word. These few days of seclusion may indeed be regarded as an intensive course of spiritual education which brings immediate positive results in a person’s life during the days and nights of Ramadaan and in the coming days, until the next Ramadan comes.

Excellence in faith
Discover Islam
In one of the great prophetic narrations which included few, yet very comprehensive words, the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, clarified one of the means for salvation, and a sign of the excellence of Islam. This narration gives the believing slave a tool by which to measure himself and realize how close or far he is from the straight path.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: "It is from the excellence of (a believer's) Islam that he should shun that which is of no concern to him". [At-Tirmithi].

This narration contains many great meanings which a believer should understand and apply. It is one of the principles and foundations of good manners, and thus some scholars considered it to constitute one-third or one-fourth of the religion of Islam.

Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, summed all the aspects of piety and devoutness in this narration. He, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, outlined for the slave what to do and what to shun, and it is an indication to the first pillar of soul purification, namely, shunning what does not concern the person, which leads to the second pillar, and that is busying oneself essentially with what concerns him”

Married life between extravagance and stinginess
Islamic Family
The following are phrases often heard from one spouse about the other: “My husband is stingy”; “My husband does not buy me my necessities”; “My husband gives money to his family and does not give me anything”; “My wife exaggerates in her spending”; “My wife does not care about saving, nor does she care how hard I work”; “My wife asks for too many things,” and so on.

It is difficult to find a household without such problems; the husband accuses the wife of exaggerating in her expenditure and she accuses him of being miserly; this leads to fights and disturbs married life, and could, in some cases, lead to divorce and the complete destruction of the family structure.

This problem, in all cases, occurs due to the lack of understanding of the rights that each spouse has upon the other. One of the greatest rights of the wife upon her husband is that he provides for her, and his spending and providing for her is considered Islamically to be one of the best ways that he could spend in charity; this includes food, drink, clothing, housing and anything else a wife might need to maintain her strength and live a normal life.

Allaah informs us that it is the duty of men to provide for their wives, and this is one of the reasons men were made superior to women, as Allaah Says (what means): “Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allaah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth…” [Quran 4: 34]

The institution of mosque
Mosques
The Arabic word for mosque is ‘masjid’, which means a place where one prostrates oneself, or a place of worship.

It should be borne in mind that prayers can be offered anywhere. No particularly consecrated place is necessary for the holding of diviner service. However, mosque plays a more important part in Islam than does any other house of worship in any other religion.

Where the Holy Quran speaks of the Muslims duty to defend and protect all houses of worship, to whatever religion they may belong, it speaks of the mosque last of all, but it mentions its distinctive characteristics, namely that the name of Almighty God is remembered there most of all:

“Did not God check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of God is commemorated in abundant measure’” (22:40). The concluding words of the verse—“mosques, in which the name of God is commemorated in abundant measure”—are significant.

Warning against over-long sermons
Islam in the world
JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA- The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has ordered Imams not to deliver lengthy Friday sermons, stressing that those who do not keep their sermons short and meaningful will be punished.
Dr. Azam Al-Shewair, Chief of the Committee for the Assessment of Imams and Khateebs at the ministry’s branch in Riyadh, said the Imams who ignore the ministry’s instructions will be forced to undergo training. If they repeat the offense, they will get a final warning and their salaries will be cut.

He said Imams should take into consideration that there are old and sick people, particularly those with diabetes, among the worshippers who cannot tolerate sitting and listening to sermons for long periods. He said Imams should follow the wisdom of keeping sermons short and meaningful.

Al-Shewair said it should be borne in mind that the Friday sermon serves as a lesson for the believers because it handles a certain subject about the affairs of Muslims or discusses a purely jurisprudential topic. Imams should, therefore, immediately delve into the topic of the sermon and be to the point.
Dr. Saleh Al-Humaid, a member of the Board of Senior Ulema and Chairman of the Supreme Judiciary Council said, “The impact of the sermon is not measured by its length but by the eloquent, concise and precise wording. Imams should refrain from flowery and bombastic language and delve directly into the core of their sermon.”
