Umm Hakeem: The wife of two defenders of Islam
Sisterhood
On the day of the Battle of Uhud, she was fighting against Islam and Muslims; and on the day of the Battle of Yarmook, she was fighting against disbelief and disbelievers. Umm Hakeem embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, but her husband, ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, did not; he fled Makkah to Yemen after he heard that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had made his death lawful.

Umm Hakeem went early in the morning to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and asked him to grant amnesty to her husband, and, sympathizing with her, he permitted her to catch up with him and give him the glad tidings of pardon. She set out in his pursuit and caught up with him at the coast of Tihaamah when he was about to sail to Yemen.

She shed tears and said to him,

"O son of my paternal uncle! I have come (with good news) from the best of the people, and the keenest to maintain good relations with people. Do not ruin yourself after I have sought safety from the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, for you, and he granted you safety." He said, "Have you really done so?" She said, "Yes, I talked to him about you and he granted you safety."

Pray-In Group Targeting Local Masajid to End “Gender Segregation”

In January of this year, Fatima Thompson, a revert to Islam living in the Baltimore metropolitan area, went to pray at the Islamic Center of Washington DC.

Arriving late, she missed the main jama’, so she prayed on her own in a section of the prayer area designated for women. The space was enclosed by a 7-foot high wooden barrier.

Soon after she finished her prayer and left the women’s area, she noticed a second prayer congregation in progress. She was upset. Had she known of this congregation, she would have joined. The barrier she prayed behind made her feel like a “second class believer”.
“That was the crystallizing moment for me,” she recalled.

Daughters in Islam
Sisterhood

Allah Almighty says (what means): “To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what He wills. He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills males. Or He makes them [both] males and females, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Competent.” [Qur’an 49:50]

Allah is the One, based on His ultimate wisdom, who grants whomever He wills sons and daughters; He grants sons only to whomever He wills, and grants daughters only to whomever He wills, and if He so wills, He makes whomever He wills infertile.

We notice in the above verse that the mention of daughters preceded that of sons, and the scholars commented on this saying: “This is to hearten daughters and encourage kindness towards them, because many fathers feel burdened by receiving a daughter. The common practice of the people during the pre-Islamic era was to hate receiving daughters, to the extent that they would bury them alive; therefore, it is as if Allah is saying to people: ‘This inferior child in your estimation takes precedence in My scale.’ He also mentions daughters first to indicate their weakness, and that they are therefore more deserving of care and attention.”

Wearing of veil is in tradition of the Madonna
Sisterhood

Veiled Muslim women have become the true upholders of western traditions of female dress, says Italy's top imam, who angrily condemned the decision to fine a woman in Italy for wearing a veil that completely covered her features.

The incident, which took place in the northern Italian town of Novara, was the first of its kind in Europe.

Izzedin Elzir, the president of the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy (UCOII) and a former fashion designer, said: "If we go and see the beautiful artistic representations of the Madonna, we see her with the veil. We don't see her semi-naked, I think.

"For that reason, I believe it is the Muslims who are protecting the traditions of our country."

His remarks are likely to cause outrage on the right, particularly among members of the Northern League, who maintain that Italy's identity is inextricably tied up with its Christian traditions.

The imam said: "I believe Italian tradition is that which can be seen by going to a church, to a museum and seeing the beautiful images of the Madonna with a beautiful veil. That is our tradition."

The granddaughter of Abu Hurayrah
Sisterhood

This is a story of the granddaughter of the great Companion Abu Hurayrah . Abu Hurayrah had married his daughter to the illustrious taabi’ee (the generation after that of the Companions) Sa’eed ibn Al-Mussayyib . From this blessed marriage, Allaah gifted Sa’eed with a pious and knowledgeable daughter.

When time came to get his daughter married, Sa’eed ibn Al-Musayyib chose for her one of his students called Abdullaah; Abdullaah stood out from the rest as his sincerity in seeking knowledge was clearly visible.

Abdullaah's love for knowledge can be seen in the fact that the very next day after his marriage to the daughter of Sa‘eed ibn al Musayyib he was putting on his cloak to go out, when his new bride asked him: ‘Where are you going?’
He said: ‘To the assembly of Sa’eed to attain knowledge.’
She said to him: ‘Sit here, I will teach you the knowledge of Sa’eed.’
